All you need for foreign language translation is at your fingertips. + Important note: It is necessary that your device has Internet access to perform translations. Free Language Translator works well enough as a translator, but it doesn't have many benefits over the great online translators available. In most cases, it actually just borrows from Google Translate, anyway. Even though it doesn't boast great looks or many customization options, the program can be proud of its speedy performance. Free Language Translator supports a little more than 60 languages, so you shouldn't have a problem finding the language you want to use. You can import any amount of text and get a translation almost instantly. You can use Google Translate or the program's built-in dictionary, but both give you about the same accuracy level. Once you've translated your text, there isn't much you can do with the program other than check the accuracy of the translation and add corrections to a custom dictionary, which, we must admit is a neat feature. The program's layout looks a little dated, but it gives you plenty of space to see your translation and type. Using the Setting menu you can change the font and keyboard layout, check for updates, and watch two available tutorial videos. In addition to copying text into the program, you can also input several popular document and subtitle formats such as DOC, TXT, HTML, and SRT to get a quick translation. Since Free Language Translator borrows heavily from Google Translate, it comes with a catch: You need to be connected to the Internet at all times to be able to use it. If you need an easy, accessible, and quick translation tool, this free program is worth a shot. Don't expect too much, though. Whether you want to travel to an exotic country to learn more about its culture or you need to read a document you received from one of your foreign partners, one thing is for sure, you need to use a translator. Adept Translator Pro is a small application that enables you to seamlessly translate texts from a wide variety of languages using various online resources. Intuitive and fresh interface After a smooth and quick setup, you come face to face with a user-friendly UI that consists of 2 areas. As you would expect from a program in this category, in the upper area you can paste the text you want to translate, whereas in the lower region you can preview the actual translation. While this process works quite well in situations when you copy content from the Internet or a document, the same cannot be said for cases when you receive a scanned document, for instance. While you can save the translation provided, the app only supports TXT and it would be useful if the program included a function that allows you to load an image file as well. Allows you to translate texts with one click The primary advantage of the application is the ease of use, meaning that you can simply paste the desired text and use the dedicated button to translate it in a matter of seconds. It is necessary to mention that the program works with over 72 different languages, including Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Lao, Maltese, Thai, Vietnamese, Welsh and Yiddish. On the other hand, the application lacks a dictionary or the possibility to add, edit or remove new words you learn from foreign languages. In fact, its only options entail automating some of its functions, namely auto-run, auto-paste and auto-copy from the clipboard. A decent translation tool for casual use Adept Translator Pro is an overall good utensil if you need to translate content you found on the Internet from time to time. Main features This new translator app supports over 100 languages including Bengali, English, Hindi, Panjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and all Indian languages. You also have the choice of Japanese, Chinese, Myanmar, Zulu, Indonesian, Turkish, Malayalam etc. Users also can use Detect Language mode if they aren’t able to detect the language of the primary sentence(from which sentence you translate ). Translate your sentences anytime anywhere using a stable internet connection. Side-features The translated sentences will save in your history and you can return back and reference it anytime. You can share the translated sentences via memo, email, facebook, Bluetooth etc. The app is ready for you to download and Install now, but it will not even launch without an Internet connection, much like other apps that use the Translate services provided by Google.

As a rule, comic books don’t change too much. The reason why so many characters have existed for so long is that they’re rarely given any real shake-ups to the status quo or their personalities. It’s been 75 years (and counting) and Bruce Wayne still isn’t over the death of his parents. Batman has always been Batman. Very occasionally, though, comics will try to do something new. In addition to new characters being added to the mythos, existing characters can be changed in radical ways. Ways that are meant to shake things up or breath new life in their stories. Some of these reinventions can prove so popular that they’ll be almost immediately embraced. Elements of the change (or all of it) will make their way into the cycle of comic book stories, being incorporated and expanded on for years. Mostly though a reinvention blows up everyone’s face. The problem with failed comic book reinventions isn’t that they take risks, but that they happen to take too many stupid or big risks. The Rage Beneath is an audiobook produced by Big Finish Productions. It was released in January. We'll walk in the shadows. By day we'll live in a dream. We'll walk in the shadows. You say you don't feel safe alone tonight. Cause you feel the pressure building in your head. Our secret's safe for one more night. But when the morning comes remember. I'll be with you. We'll walk in the. The desire to bring something new to the character goes so far that the very essence of the character becomes lost in the process. Some essential or beloved aspect is ignored or rewritten. The entries on this list aren’t examples of why comics shouldn’t take big risks with their classic characters. They are, however, examples of the types of risks that should be avoided. So, here are the 15 Worst Reinventions Of Iconic Comic Book Characters. Barbara Gordon’s Oracle Reversal. ’ infamous New 52 reboot wasn’t a universal failure. However, several mistakes were made in reinventing characters that eventually had to be fixed in the DC Rebirth event. One of the biggest mistakes (and one that is still left unaffected) is the case of Barbara Gordon going from Oracle back to. Barbara’s always had a complicated history in the DCU, as becoming paralyzed by The Joker and Oracle was never “the plan.” It The Killing Joke was later retconned into existence. Yet, once Barbara settled into that role of Oracle, she became one of the most important figures in the universe and served as a very important example of handicapped representation. DC did away with all of that by taking Barbara back to her earliest (and honestly most boring) role. Barbara as Batgirl is good but Barbara as Oracle is amazing. Guy Gardner: Warrior. The 1990s were a strange and messy time for comics. There seems to be an unspoken and incredibly misguided effort to reinvent a ton of classic characters into more intense and “extreme” personas. Few examples illustrate this better than Guy Gardner going from a to The Warrior. Since his introduction, Guy was always one of the more rough-and-tumble characters in the DCU. Yet the interesting thing about Guy was how that personality fit into the mannered role of a “space cop” like the. Warrior, however, just doubled down on Guy’s most outrageous and overtly masculine elements. Things got even worse when Guy became part alien and was gifted a number of powers that made into an almost literal monster. Warrior was loud, obnoxious and incredibly over-the-top. Thankfully it was eventually undone with Geoff Johns taking revamping the GL mythos in Green Lantern: Rebirth. 13. The Fatally Unpopular Second Robin. Jason Todd has become many people’s favorite member of the Bat Family. As Red Hood, Jason is loved and endlessly debated. He’s a fantastic character. Yet, when Jason was introduced as the second Robin, following Dick Grayson, fans (rightfully) revolted. Regardless of how Jason has been portrayed lately, in his first couple appearances he was a bitter pill to swallow. Unlike Dick who was almost immediately adored for his upbeat attitude, Jason was intolerable. He was bratty, whiny, and way too rebellious. For the second Robin, DC wanted to try a different type of child sidekick but it backfired as almost no one was drawn to Jason. It all resulted in fans literally voting (in a still controversial poll) to kill the character off in the Death in the Family story arc. It’s one thing to be unpopular, but it’s a different level of unpopularity to be so hated your death is actively campaigned for by fans. 12. New Name and New Attitude for Captain Marvel. With (one of) their big universe reboots, DC Comics used Crisis on Infinite Earths to tweak and streamline many of their characters. For most part, these changes were for the better. However, with Billy Batson’s alter ego, things weren’t so wonderful. Post-C risis did allow DC to change the character’s name from to Shazam, which is arguably the better choice. This is about the only thing they can be lauded however. The Post- Crisis was a gritty and grim character, which was the complete wrong way to take a supehero that’s a literal kid in disguise. Many DC heroes can pull off the whole grim-dark attitude. Shazam is not one of them. Shazam is the power fantasy of every comic book reading kid. No one wants a depressing brood-a-thon to get mixed in with their superhero day dream. Hal Jordan’s Parallax Infection. It’s since been retconned as something that happened to Hal, not something Hal did. Originally though Hal Jordan’s transformation from Green Lantern to supervillain Parallax was one of the strangest and most uncomfortable reinventions in comics. Happening right in the middle of the “extreme” era of the 90s, DC decided that their first real Green Lantern was just a little too heroic for their liking. After seeing the destruction of his hometown, Hal went insane. He became obsessed with power and killed nearly everyone that stood in his way. It was certainly a shocking move, but also one that reasonably angered a lot of people. Hal wasn’t just reinvented into a supervillain– his character was destroyed to become one. The only reason that Hal’s time as Parallax doesn’t rank higher is because of the retcon. It was established the yellow lantern entity, Parallax, was possessing Hal. Hal wasn’t in control of his own actions, but the creative team behind this move certainly was in control. Kid Flash is Barr Torr? The Kid Flash mantle has fallen to a lot of characters over the years, starting with the original Wally West. In the New 52 reboot, however, the decision was made to ignore Wally entirely and give the mantle to Bart Allen, a young speedster from the future. At least that’s what appeared to be the case for a couple years. Eventually though it was revealed that Bart Allen was nothing more than a code name. The new Kid Flash was, in fact, a future criminal (albeit an unfairly persecuted one) called Barr Torr. It was a completely misguided move from the start. Bart Allen wasn’t a universally beloved character, as he was a bit annoying and brash. However, there was ton of growth and depth to his character. Replacing him with Barr Torr just ignored all that investment and history and created someone who had nothing going for him but a fake name. The Multicolored Mess of Superman Red / Blue. This does blur the line a bit between reinvention and a homage. It’s definitely a mistake, no matter the label. Back when Grant Morrison was writing the Justice League of America, (temporarily) lost his powers and gained new ones. This eventually resulted in Superman splitting into two separate personas, Superman Red and Superman Blue. The origins of this idea can be found in a goofy ’60s comic which does the same thing to Supes. However, the point of the JLA twist was to add some new life into one of DC’s oldest heroes. While the twist was certainly different, it was far successful. The costumes were garish, the situation itself was highly confusing and it did nothing to really explore Superman on a deeper level. It was just weirdness for the sake of weirdness. A reinvention, at best, should add something or force a new perspective, but this did nothing of the sort and was quickly erased. The Shadow’s Cyborg Resurrection. He’s nowhere near as popular but The Shadow is pretty much the original. He was the masked, dark vigilante, swooping through the night, years before Bruce Wayne ever showed up. Therefore, when DC Comics acquired the right to The Shadow in the late 1980s they decided they needed to do something different with him. They couldn’t have two nearly identical characters, even if The Shadow frequently uses the guns. The moronic decision was made to “kill off” The Shadow and resurrect him, putting his disembodied head on a robot body. As a result, DC got a new Shadow but it was one that precisely no one was asking for or wanted. The new robotic Shadow wasn’t interesting or even mildly compelling. It was a transparent and lame attempt to seem edgy and relevant. The Shadow’s cultural cache is in being an urban cowboy, not an undead cyborg. Fate Ditches the Helm and Takes No Prisoners. The interpretation of many modern comic book fans about DC’s Dr. Fate is that he’s a magical and other-worldly dignified presence. For most of the character’s history that impression has been incredibly accurate. It was not the case in the ’90s. For unknown reasons, besides the ’90s were horrible for everyone in comics, DC decided the graceful and ageless Dr. Fate wasn’t hip enough for the kids, with their Pokemon and Furbies. So half of Dr. Fate’s mask was ripped off, Dr. Fate himself became ripped and the character did nothing but punch gangsters in the face. He still talked about the mystical but he was little more than a thug. It was a gross overestimation of what DC thought readers wanted and butchered everything unique and compelling about the character. It was an effort to seem more current, but the new Dr. Fate was just desperate. Has been through a lot of reboots and none of them have been wonderful (pun much intended). The most misguided effort though was in the 1970s; when the decision was made to cut off Wonder Woman completely, from not just her fellow Amazons but her powers. Rather than being blessed by the gods, Wonder Woman became a powerless spy-like figure trained by an offensive stereotype of man, named I Ching. It’s not a terrible idea on paper. Wonder Woman has a female James Bond has potential but the execution never lived up to the plan. It’s such a risky move and the transformation was handled with no grace. Wonder Woman was completely defined by the men in her life. From the trollish I Ching to the dull as dried paint chips (still) Steve Trevor, they were the driving forces of the story, not Diana. Far from being am empowered de-powered hero, Wonder Woman’s 70’s run was an utter mess. The Punisher’s Angelic Turn. The appeal of Frank Castle is that he’s one of ’s most grounded heroes. Isn’t the most attractive in shape or morally upstanding hero in Marvel’s roster. Frank is a mean mercenary who kills the bad guys. It’s simple but it works. This is the main reason that the decision to make The Punisher into a literal avenging angel in the late 90’s was a disaster from the start. The Punisher had been without a solo series for a few years in the company’s publication history. So, it was decided to bring him back and more different than ever. Castle wasn’t just a regular mercenary anymore, but one with supernatural powers from angels. A reinvention should change some aspect of the character but keep the core tenants intact. With this Punisher, the core was completely warped. Punisher was no longer gritty or grounded. It didn’t last long but any period of time was too long. 4. The Iron Teenager. Marvel taking their characters and rapidly de-aging them is a trick they have used multiple times. One of the best examples is when they took Loki and made him a teenager (and a quasi-hero). Using the same method on, however, wasn’t nearly as successful. The consensus was reached at Marvel that the adult Tony Stark had become too depressing and burdened with baggage. While this was admittedly true, rather than try to write themselves out of the hole they had created in any organic way, Marvel decided to hit the literal reset button. They took Tony and aged him back into a teenager. The only problem with that is that teenage Tony had none of the older Tony’s character development or growth. In fact the younger Stark was even worse than the older moody one because he was insufferably arrogant and pompous. The teenage Tony emphasized the character’s worst aspects for nothing. The Overly Complicated Ben Reilly. The tragedy of Ben Reilly is that there’s a chance he could’ve been great. However, Reilly will forever be tied to ‘s infamous Clone Saga, which not only ruined his character but nearly wrecked Spider-Man’s continuity for years. Ben Reilly was meant to replace Peter Parker, as the character had gotten too intense for most Spider-Man fans. The intention was to reveal that Ben Reilly wasn’t a clone but the true Peter Parker who had been missing since the 1970’s. It would’ve been a simple (for comics) and elegant way to get Spider-Man back to his roots. Unfortunately, the introduction of Ben Reilly and the Clone Saga went on for so long that things became anything but simple. Rather than a harkening back to the glory days, Ben Reilly began to represent everything wrong with Spider-Man during his creation. It and the character were disaster. Reilly is still around (and he has his fans), but when he appeared he did the exact opposite of what he was supposed to do– he was a solution that only made things worse. The Murderous Batman. As many jokes that can be made about Batman being an overly serious edgelord, it’s not completely true. Batman is a dark and grim character, but it’s usually done within reason. At least if Bruce Wayne is under the cowl that’s the case. When Jean Paul Valley took on the name of the Bat in ’90s. Everything went awry. Jean Paul Valley’s Batman was so insanely intense that it would almost seem like a parody. Yet, DC wanted people to take their new and much more murderous Batman (and his ridiculously over-designed costume) seriously. To the company’s credit, shortly after Jean Paul Valley took over as Batman it was clear he was the wrong man for the job. Valley was unstable and presented as such at every turn. Even if Valley was intentionally bad Batman, he was still a Batman. It wasn’t interesting, it was just over-the-top. Captain America Hails Hydra. There really is no comic reinvention that has been more misguided than turning Steve Rogers into a Hydra agent. It’s true that Hydra wasn’t the “real” Cap. Marvel was at least wise enough to design things where the legacy of Captain America can exist untarnished. This is only with hindsight in mind. When the idea was first introduced, there was every indication given that Hydra Cap was the same Cap that people had been reading for generations. It was awful. The reinvention to make Captain America a Hydra agent wasn’t clever and didn’t have anything to say other than “Nazism is bad.” It was all shock with no substance. Hydra Cap turned everything readers thought they knew about the character on its head but managed to say nothing significant in the process. If there’s going to be a huge change, it should at least matter. The only way Hydra Cap matter was in angering everyone. — What are some of the worst comic book reinventions that you’ve ever seen? Sound off in the comments! Note This topic applies to Visual Studio 2012 and Visual Studio Express 2012 for Web. The topic covers features that are included in the latest available as of October, 2013. You can also use this topic for Visual Studio 2013 and Visual Studio 2013 Express for Web. The screens will look slightly different from what you see here and some new features are not covered, but the basic procedures for deployment are the same. For more information, see. You can deploy to any of the following destinations: • To a hosting provider. • To a file folder on your network (you can manually copy from there to a folder used by IIS). • To IIS on your development computer as a testing environment. • To a server on your company's internal network. To configure deployment for a web project in Visual Studio, you create one or more publish profiles using the Publish Web wizard. A publish profile specifies the server you are deploying to, the credentials needed to log on to the server, the databases to deploy, and other deployment options. When you are ready to publish, you choose the profile you want to use and click the Publish button in the wizard or in the Web One Click Publish toolbar. Deploying a web site often requires additional preparation work besides creating a profile. This topic does not include information about other tasks that you might need to do. For example, you specify compile and merge options in the Package/Publish Web tab, not in the publish profile. For more information, see. Note If you are publishing to Windows Azure Web Sites, you can download and import a.publishsettings file for a destination web site, or you can connect directly to your Windows Azure Account from Visual Studio. If you connect to your account, Visual Studio displays a list of your web sites, and you can choose one to import publish settings. When you connect to your account in Visual Studio, you can also perform web site management functions and get web site diagnostic information in Visual Studio. The screen shots in this topic don’t show all of the newer features for working with Windows Azure Web Sites. For more information, see on the WindowsAzure.com web site. To create a publish profile. • If you are going to use a.publishsettings file to create your publish profile, start by downloading the.publishsettings file from your hosting provider. The procedure for doing this depends on your hosting provider. You don’t need to do this if you are deploying to a Windows Azure Web Site. • In Solution Explorer, right-click the project and select Publish (or Publish Web Site for web site projects) to open the Publish Web wizard. If you haven't created any profiles yet, the wizard opens on the Profile tab. Powerful web publishing and website management tool that integrates authoring, reviewing, and publishing in an easy-to-use WYSIWYG HTML editor. Web publishing, or 'online publishing,' is the process of publishing content on the Internet. It includes creating and uploading websites, updating webpages, and. Otherwise, it opens on the Preview tab. In that case, to create a new profile you must first click the Profile tab. Notice the Manage profiles button on the Profile tab. After you have created a profile, you can use this button to rename or delete it. • Perform one of the following procedures to create a publish profile: To create a profile by importing a.publishsettings file for a web site. • In the Select or import a publish profile drop-down list, choose, and enter a name for the profile in the New Profile dialog box. The settings for a publish profile are stored in a.pubxml file that is located in the PublishProfiles folder. In web application projects, the PublishProfiles folder is in the Properties folder (for C#) or the My Project folder (for VB). In web site projects the PublishProfiles folder is in the App_Data folder. When you create the first publish profile in a web site project, a website.publishproj file is also created in the root folder of the web site. These files are only used for publishing; they are not deployed when you deploy the site. For more information about.pubxml files, see. • Select a value from the Publish method list. Web Deploy is the recommended publish method because it can automate the widest range of deployment tasks. However, before choosing this method, make sure that the hosting provider or server that you are deploying to supports Web Deploy. If you select Web Deploy and you are publishing to IIS on your own computer for testing, you must have administrative rights on your computer, and Visual Studio must be running in administrator mode. (To open Visual Studio in administrator mode, right-click the Visual Studio icon in the Windows Start menu and select Run as Administrator.) If you select Web Deploy and you are publishing to a server on your own network, make sure that the server is set up for the Web Deployment Agent Service (MSDepSvc, also known as Remote Agent service), and that you have administrative rights on the destination server. For information about how to set up the destination server, see on the Microsoft TechNet web site. The screenshots and most of the steps in this topic assume that you have selected the Web Deploy publish method. However, the descriptions of UI elements that you see when you select other publish methods are also accurate for those other publish methods. For example, if you select the File System publish method, you will still see the Destination URL text box, and the only purpose of that text box is to automate opening a browser to the deployed site after successful deployment. If you are deploying to a hosting provider that does not support Web Deploy, you can select FTP instead. In that case, the instructions for some of the following steps are different. The Service URL and Site/application fields are replaced by a Target Location field, in which you enter the FTP or FTPS URL. If anonymous logon is allowed, you do not need to enter a user name and password. If you need passive mode, edit the publish profile (.pubxml) file and change the value of the FtpPassiveMode element to true. For information about passive mode, see, and for information about how to edit the.pubxml file, see. Besides Web Deploy and FTP, another option is to use the File System publish method. This method publishes the web application to a folder that you specify. You can then use your own FTP tool to transfer the files to a hosting provider. One of the Publish method options is Web Deploy Package. If you want to create a deployment package, see. • In the Service URL box, enter the URL that Web Deploy can use to publish the application. If you are publishing to a hosting company, the company provides this value. It can be in any of the following formats: • HostingCompanyURL (for example, contoso.com) • HostingCompanyURL (for example, • HostingCompanyURL:8172/msdeploy.axd (for example, If you are publishing to IIS on your own computer for testing, enter localhost or the name of your computer. If you are publishing to a server on your own network, enter one of the following URLs: • ServerName • ServerName /msdeployagentservice If you’re publishing through a firewall, you might need to open port 8172. • In the Site/application box, enter the name of the IIS web site and application. If you are publishing to a hosting company, the company provides this value. It is typically either a domain name (for example, contoso.com) or a domain and application name (for example, contoso.com/MyApplication). If you are publishing to IIS on your own computer for testing, or to a server on your internal network, enter the site and application name as they appear in IIS Manager. For example, if you are publishing to the default web site in IIS and if the application name is MyApplication, enter Default Web Site/MyApplication. • In the User name and Password boxes, enter credentials for an account that has sufficient authority to perform deployment tasks on the destination web server. If you are publishing to a hosting company, the company provides these values. • If you do not want to be prompted for a password every time you publish, select the Save password check box. The password is encrypted and stored in a.pubxml.user file in the PublishProfiles folder. If you use source control, this file is excluded from source control by default. • If you want Visual Studio to automatically open your default browser to the URL of the deployed application after deployment is finished, enter the URL in the Destination URL box. To validate the settings on the Connection tab. • Click Validate Connection to validate that you can make a connection to the server using the settings you entered. • If you see a Certificate Error dialog box, make sure that you are publishing to the correct URL (double-check Service URL and the server name in the Certificate Error dialog box). If the settings are correct, select Save this certificate for future sessions of Visual Studio so that you do not get the same error message again, and then choose Accept Certificate. (This error means that the hosting provider has chosen to avoid the expense of purchasing an SSL certificate for the URL that you are deploying to. If you prefer to establish a secure connection by using a valid certificate, contact your hosting provider.) If Visual Studio can't make a connection, make sure that nothing is preventing the connection from your computer (such as a proxy or firewall setting), and then try again. If you still can't make a connection, contact the hosting provider or the person who maintains the destination server. • If you are deploying a web application project, choose the build configuration to deploy from the Configuration drop-down list. You normally deploy a Release build for web application projects. A Debug build does not run efficiently and is typically selected only when you are deploying to a test environment and you need to debug in that environment. This setting doesn’t have any effect for web site projects. For a web site project you’ll see Debug listed as a build configuration, but that has no effect when the web site project is compiled dynamically. For more information, see. • If you want to delete files on the destination server that have no matching files in the web project on your computer, expand File Publish Options and select the Remove additional files at destination check box. Caution If you select this option, make sure that you use the preview feature so that you see in advance which files will be deleted before you deploy. The expected behavior is that Web Deploy will delete files on the destination server that you have deleted in your project. However, the entire folder structure under the source and destination folders is compared, and in some scenarios Web Deploy might delete files you don't want to delete. For example, if you have a web application in a subfolder on the server when you deploy a project to the root folder, the subfolder will be deleted. You might have one project for the main site at contoso.com and another project for a blog at contoso.com/blog. The blog application is in a subfolder. If you select Remove additional files at destination when you deploy the main site, the blog application will be deleted. For another example, your App_Data folder might get deleted unexpectedly. Certain databases such as SQL Server Compact store database files in the App_Data folder. After the initial deployment you don't want to keep copying the database files in subsequent deployments so you select Exclude App_Data on the Package/Publish Web tab. After you do that, if you have Remove additional files at destination selected, your database files and the App_Data folder itself will be deleted the next time you publish. • If you want to precompile or merge assemblies when you package or publish the project, expand File Publish Options and select Precompile during publishing. By default, you get the following compile and merge behavior when you select this option: • IIS metabase path is not used for source input. You might need to use an IIS metabase path if your web site contains one or more sub-web sites. During compilation, the compiler processes all of the files in a directory tree. If there are sub-web sites, this will result in build errors. To avoid these errors, you can specify the IIS metabase path of the web site you are compiling, which causes the ASP.NET compiler to skip any sub-web sites defined in the IIS metabase. • Precompiled assemblies will not be updateable. By default,.aspx and.ascx files are compiled and the HTML markup for pages and controls is removed and compiled into the assembly output. Compiling these files is typically the only reason you would precompile a web application project, but you might have selected the Precompile this application before publishing check box only so that you can choose a merge option. • Each source file generates a separate assembly. If you want to change any of these default settings, click the Configure link. For more information see,. • If you want to prevent files in the App_Data folder from being deployed to the destination server, expand File Publish Options and select Exclude files from the App_Data folder. The App_Data folder typically contains test databases during the development cycle. The contents of this folder might not be appropriate for a production environment. The Databases section of the Settings tab is not shown for the FTP, File System, and FPSE publish methods. If you selected one of those methods, skip the following procedure and deploy your database manually. For more information, see. If you selected the Web Deploy publish method, you see one entry for each database that the project uses. The illustration shows a project that uses two databases. If a database that your project uses is missing, make sure that you have a connection string for it in the Web.config file. The Settings tab lists databases that are identified by a connection string in the Web.config file or by an Entity Framework Code First context class. • In the connection string box, choose or enter a connection string that points to the destination database. The combo box contains connection strings from the.publishsettings file (if you used one to create the profile), from other publish profiles in the project, and from databases for which you have connections in Server Explorer. You can choose one of these, enter a connection string manually, or click the ellipsis to open the Destination Connection String dialog box. If the connection string is for a database that is accessed by Entity Framework Database First or Model First, do not specify the full Entity Framework version of the connection string here. Visual Studio uses the connection string you enter here to perform the deployment, then it constructs the Entity Framework connection string to put in the deployed Web.config file. • If you don't want the connection string you entered to be used by the application at run time, clear the Use this connection string at runtime check box. When the Use this connection string at runtime check box is selected, the deployment process changes the connection string for this database in the deployed Web.config file to the value that's in the combo box. In most scenarios this is the right choice, but in some scenarios you might want the application to connect to the database with restricted permissions. In that case, clear this check box and create a Web.config transformation that changes the connection string in the deployed Web.config file to what you want it to be at run time. For information about how to set up Web.config transformations, see on the ASP.NET website. • If you use Entity Framework Code First to manage the database, you can use to deploy the database and updates to the database schema. To do that, select Execute Code First Migrations (runs on application start). When you use Code First Migrations to deploy the database, nothing is done with the database during the actual deployment process. However, the deployment process updates the Web.config file in the destination web site so that Code First Migrations uses the MigrateDatabaseToLatestVersion initializer class. When the application accesses the database for the first time after deployment, Migrations automatically creates the database or updates the database schema to the latest version. If the application implements a Migrations Seed method, the method runs after the database is created or the schema updated. Note If your application will run in Medium Trust in the environment you are deploying to (which is true of most third-party hosting providers), make sure that you are using Entity Framework version 5 or later. EF 4.3 and prerelease versions of EF 5 require Full Trust to make database schema updates. You can use EF 5 in projects that target ASP.NET 4 and later versions. You can only use Code First Migrations for deployment if you have implemented a DbMigrationsConfiguration class. If an error message indicates that the DbMigrationsConfiguration class is missing, you must enable Code First Migrations before you can finish configuring database deployment. If you get this error but you don’t want to use Migrations for deployment, or you can’t because your database is not managed by Code First, see. If the project implements multiple DbMigrationsConfiguration classes for a context class, you can't configure deployment for this database in the publish profile. For information about how to deploy the database manually, see. The credentials in the connection string that you enter in the connection string box must represent an administrative user account. This connection string is used to create the database the first time you deploy it and to update the database schema when you deploy database changes. If you want the application to access the database at run time with limited permissions, clear the Use this connection string at runtime check box and create a Web.config transformation that specifies the connection string you want the application to use at run time. For more information, see on the ASP.NET site. If you are deploying a SQL Server Compact database, and if the connection string for the database is in the Web.config file, you have to configure a Web.config transformation to create an additional connection string. Code First will use this connection string when it updates the database schema. (If you don't do create this connection string manually, Visual Studio creates it automatically, but the automatically created connection string has the wrong providerName value.) The XML for this transformation looks like the following example. If you are using a DBContext class with an existing database (which means Code First doesn’t manage database updates), you can’t use Migrations for deployment. In that case, or if Code First does manage the database but you just don't want to deploy by using Migrations, see • If you are not using a Code First context class to access the database, and if it is a SQL Server or SQL Server Express database, and you want to deploy the database along with the application, select Update database. This option uses the dbDacFx Web Deploy provider. During initial deployment, the database schema is created. During subsequent deployments, the destination database is compared to the source database, and the destination database schema is updated to match the source database. Data in database tables is not automatically deployed. If you need to deploy data to the destination database, create a custom database script and configure it to run during deployment after the [Auto schema update] script runs, as described in the following step. By default, the dbDacFx provider won't automatically make schema changes that cause data loss, such as dropping a column or a table. If the provider detects a schema change that would cause data loss, deployment fails and the reason is displayed in the Visual Studio Output window. If that happens, create a custom script to perform the required schema updates, and configure it to run before the [Auto schema update] script runs, as described in the following step. As an alternative to running a script during deployment, you can connect to the destination database in SQL Server Object Explorer and update the database interactively before you publish the project. If you are deploying to a hosting company, make sure that the hosting company has Web Deploy 3.0 and the dbDacFx provider installed on its servers. If you are deploying to a web server on your company's network, use the following link to install Web Deploy 3.0 and the dbDacFx provider on the web server. • This software is required only on the destination web server, not on the destination database server. If you are deploying to IIS on your development computer you don't have to install this software because it is installed with Visual Studio 2012, Visual Studio Express 2012 for Web, or the by default. If you have multiple databases in your project, but you want to use only one database in the deployed application, you can typically combine multiple source databases into one destination database. You can do that by choosing Update database and entering the same destination connection string for each of the source databases. You can combine the databases as long as there are no object name collisions, such as a table name that is the same in multiple source databases. • If you selected Update database and you want to run custom SQL scripts during deployment, click Configure database updates. The Configure Database Updates dialog box opens. You use the Add SQL Script link to add scripts, the up and down arrows to change the order in which they are run, and the check boxes to specify whether a listed script will be run during deployment. The script labeled [Auto schema update] is automatically generated and run during the deployment process to update the schema of the destination database to match the source database. You can specify custom scripts to run before, after, or both before and after the automatic script runs. The following illustration shows the Configure Database Updates dialog box after a custom script has been added. • If the database is a SQL Server Express or SQL Server Compact database file in the App_Data folder, and if you don't want that file to be copied to the destination server, open the of the Project Properties window and select the Exclude files from the App_Data folder check box. Make sure that the build configuration you choose on the Package/Publish Web tab when you select this option is the same one that you specify for deployment on the Settings tab of the Publish Web wizard. • If the database is a SQL Server Compact database, you might also need to make sure that the database engine is deployed. For more information, see on the ASP.NET web site. • If you want to see a preview that lists the files that will be copied to and deleted from the hosting provider, click Start Preview. After a short wait, the list of files appears in the tab. The first time you publish, all of the files that are required to run your application are copied to the hosting provider. When you publish updates, only changed files are copied. (Except for the Web.config file: Visual Studio can't predict what changes might result from transformations and Web Deploy parameters, so it always copies the Web.config file.) If you chose the Remove additional files at destination option, it is especially important to check the preview list before you publish. • If you selected Update database for a database and you want to see what will be done to that database, click the Preview database link that appears to the right of the database. (You can't preview changes that you are deploying by using Entity Framework Code First Migrations.) The Database Preview dialog box shows the script that will be run in the destination database. If the database is large, it could take a minute or more for this preview to appear. • When you are ready to deploy the project, click Publish. (Make sure that you have reviewed the information in to determine if there are other deployment tasks that you need to do first.) • If you didn't already validate the connection when you configured the Connection tab, you might see a Certificate Error dialog box. For more information, see. When the deployment process finishes, the Output window indicates whether deployment was successful. If you entered a value for Destination URL on the Connection tab, your default browser opens to that URL after successful deployment. If deployment fails, see the Error List window for error messages. For troubleshooting resources, see. Web Hosts essentially rent out space on their servers to users like you who want to start their own sites. Think of the internet as a huge continent divided into territories owned by different “countries,” or hosting companies. You only need one little plot of land to build a house, but to get that land you have to approach one of the land owners and buy a plot of space that resides in their territory. Sure, you either own your plot of land or you rent it out yearly, but that doesn’t mean you own the entire territory. Just like moving into a neighborhood, there are rules you must follow as to what you’re allowed to do with your little plot. This can include content guidelines (some hosts won’t provide service to adult oriented websites, etc.), and all hosts require their clients to follow applicable laws and regulations of their respective countries. After all, just because you own the land your house is built on doesn’t mean you can set up a water park in the front yard! So, why would anyone bother to pay for an independent web host when they could just sign up for a Blogspot or LiveJournal account? Well, there are a few perks that come with purchasing your own space on a web hosts’ server, otherwise known as a domain. Purchasing a domain allows you to choose a domain name for your website. This can be.com,.net,.org or all three! There are a handful of other options now that seem to be growing every day, like.biz and.co, but those are still the 3 most common. Having an independent domain name can go a long way towards boosting a site’s credibility. It shows your customers that your business is independent and established, or lets readers know that you’re serious about publishing content on an independent platform. The line is admittedly blurred in practice, as nearly all web hosts offer some form of publishing service, and vice versa. You can buy a domain name off of publishers, like WordPress and you can build a site from scratch or upload themes with only a web host. It is possible to build a website on a hosted domain solely through something called FTP (File Transfer Protocol) access provided with your hosting account. However, as mentioned before, this requires fairly extensive coding knowledge, or the ability to upload an independent theme. The whole process is rather messy and best saved for advanced coders. There are many reasons for this, not the least being that website themes, particularly those designed for blogs, are already search-engine optimized. What this means is that, simply by using a premade blog theme, the theme creator has already done a good share of promotional work for you by building a website framework that search engines find easy to get to. This is called SEO or Search Engine Optimization, a topic we’ll go further in-depth on in future installments. Okay, then, now that I’ve convinced you that solely building your website through a web host is a pain in the neck, why bother with a web host at all? You may not need to. The hosting provided through sites like Blogger, WordPress and TypePad may be enough for your needs. You can even upgrade to a custom domain for a fee, and your visitors need never know you didn’t pay for space on a server from the beginning. This is often a more economical way to go about things, but there are benefits to having a web host, too. Depending on your needs, including traffic, content type and freedom of advertising, among others, a web publisher may or may not be the right option for you. Many publisher/hosts will charge an additional fee on top of the custom domain upgrade to advertise through programs outside their own, including the ever-popular option, Google AdSense. This can come as a surprise and frustrate many site owners who are under the impression they have more control over their site than they really do. It’s easiest to explain what a web publisher is by first explaining what a web host is not. Going back to the house analogy, you can buy a plot of land to build your house on but that price does not include the lumber, wiring and skills needed to actually build a house. For that, you have to hire a contractor, or a web publisher, and from there you still have a variety of options: You can build the house from scratch with your own detailed specifications on everything from the wall color to the layout, or you can select from a sample of pre-existing model homes. The easiest route to take is, of course, to build a home based off of preexisting plans and it’s the same way with a website. That’s where publishers like WordPress come in. There are literally thousands and thousands of contractors, or theme developers, who have already sketched out the building plans for fully functional websites using a variety of coding languages including HTML, CSS and PHP. Consider these the building materials as well as the special skills needed to bring your site to life. If HTML and CSS are the bricks and mortar of your website, then PHP is the electricity that makes all the modern amenities run just right. Sure, you can build a house without electricity, but it’s not going to be up to code with the rest of the neighborhood. We can discuss the intricacies of coding later. For now, it’s good enough that you’re aware of the different acronyms you’ll hear bandied about as you foray into the tangled web (pun very much intended) of site design. The level of input you have over the specifics of your site’s layout depends largely on the theme and how much work you’re willing to put into tweaking the details (or hiring someone else to do so). Generally, the more customizable a theme is, the more coding knowledge is necessary. The more “user friendly,” the more basic the options will be. There are always exceptions to the rule, but for the most part, I recommend that new bloggers stick to simple, user friendly themes before diving in and getting their hands dirty with the CSS. Unless you’re like me, in which case you’re dead set on using the most customizable theme there is for your first website without knowing a lick of PHP and learning everything through trial and error along the way. If that’s the case, we should both probably spend more time reading Hubs on how to be patient, but alas! Fortunately, many of the themes offered through web publishers are free. There is quite a lot of variety to be found by browsing themes submitted to publisher databases, but even more can be found through independent websitess. I’ll link a few popular destinations below. Many of the most popular themes have both a free, standard version and a paid premium version. We’ll discuss those more in the next installment of this series, “How to Choose a WordPress Theme For Your Blog or Website.' Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s summarize the major differences between a web host and a web publisher. A web host: • Leases space on the internet for your website. • Provides you with a unique domain name (.com,.org,.net, etc.). • Does NOT (usually) come with a premade website. • Allows for an advanced level of customization. A web publisher: • Makes your website available to view on your domain. • Provides ready-made themes to build your website. • Allows customization from beginner to advanced levels depending on the platform. Overview [ ] Websites have many functions and can be used in various fashions; a website can be a, a commercial website, a or a website. Websites can be the work of an individual, a business or other organization, and are typically dedicated to a particular topic or purpose. Any website can contain a to any other website, so the distinction between individual sites, as perceived by the user, can be blurred. Websites are written in, or converted to, HTML () and are accessed using a interface classified as a. Web pages can be viewed or otherwise accessed from a range of -based and Internet-enabled devices of various sizes, including desktop computers,, tablet computers and smartphones. A website is on a computer system known as a, also called an HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) server. These terms can also refer to the software that runs on these systems which retrieves and delivers the web pages in response to requests from the website's users. Is the most commonly used web server software (according to statistics) and 's is also commonly used. Some alternatives, such as,, or, are fully functional and lightweight. Static website [ ]. Main article: A static website is one that has web pages stored on the server in the format that is sent to a client web browser. It is primarily coded in (HTML); (CSS) are used to control appearance beyond basic HTML. Images are commonly used to effect the desired appearance and as part of the main content. Audio or video might also be considered 'static' content if it plays automatically or is generally non-interactive. This type of website usually displays the same information to all visitors. Similar to handing out a printed brochure to customers or clients, a static website will generally provide consistent, standard information for an extended period of time. Although the website owner may make updates periodically, it is a manual process to edit the text, photos and other content and may require basic website design skills and software. Simple forms or marketing examples of websites, such as classic website, a five-page website or a brochure website are often static websites, because they present pre-defined, static information to the user. This may include information about a company and its products and services through text, photos, animations, audio/video, and navigation menus. Static websites can be edited using four broad categories of software: •, such as or, where content and HTML markup are manipulated directly within the editor program • offline editors, such as and (previously Macromedia Dreamweaver), with which the site is edited using a and the final HTML markup is generated automatically by the editor software • WYSIWYG online editors which create media rich online presentation like web pages, widgets, intro, blogs, and other documents. • such as allow users to create and upload web pages to a web server without detailed HTML knowledge, as they pick a suitable template from a palette and add pictures and text to it in a fashion without direct manipulation of HTML code. Static websites may still use (SSI) as an editing convenience, such as sharing a common menu bar across many pages. As the site's behaviour to the reader is still static, this is not considered a dynamic site. Dynamic website [ ]. Main articles: and A dynamic website is one that changes or customizes itself frequently and automatically. Server-side dynamic pages are generated 'on the fly' by computer code that produces the HTML (CSS are responsible for appearance and thus, are static files). There are a wide range of software systems, such as, and (JSP), and (CFML) that are available to generate. Various and are available for general-use like,, and to make it faster and easier to create complex dynamic websites. A site can display the current state of a dialogue between users, monitor a changing situation, or provide information in some way personalized to the requirements of the individual user. For example, when the front page of a news site is requested, the code running on the web server might combine stored HTML fragments with news stories retrieved from a or another website via to produce a page that includes the latest information. Dynamic sites can be interactive by using, storing and reading back, or by creating a series of pages that reflect the previous history of clicks. Another example of dynamic content is when a retail website with a database of media products allows a user to input a search request, e.g. For the keyword. In response, the content of the web page will spontaneously change the way it looked before, and will then display a list of Beatles products like CDs, DVDs and books. Uses code to instruct the web browser how to interactively modify the page contents. One way to simulate a certain type of dynamic website while avoiding the performance loss of initiating the dynamic engine on a per-user or per-connection basis, is to periodically automatically regenerate a large series of static pages. Multimedia and interactive content [ ] Early websites had only text, and soon after, images. Web browser were then used to add audio, video, and interactivity (such as for a that mirrors the complexity of a desktop application like a ). Examples of such plug-ins are,,, and written in. Includes provisions for audio and video without plugins. Is also built into most modern web browsers, and allows for website creators to send code to the web browser that instructs it how to interactively modify page content and communicate with the web server if needed. The browser's internal representation of the content is known as the (DOM) and the technique is known as. A 2010-era trend in websites called 'responsive design' has given the best of viewing experience as it provides with a device based layout for users. These websites change their layout according to the device or mobile platform thus giving a rich user experience. Spelling [ ] While 'web site' was the original spelling (sometimes capitalized 'Web site', since 'Web' is a proper noun when referring to the ), this variant has become rarely used, and 'website' has become the standard spelling. All major style guides, such as and the, have reflected this change. Types [ ] Websites can be divided into two broad categories—static and interactive. Interactive sites are part of the community of sites, and allow for interactivity between the site owner and site visitors or users. Static sites serve or capture information but do not allow engagement with the audience or users directly. Some websites are informational or produced by enthusiasts or for personal use or entertainment. Many websites do aim to make money, using one or more business models, including: • Posting interesting content and selling either through direct sales or through an advertising network. •: products or services are purchased directly through the website • Advertising products or services available at a •: basic content is available for free but premium content requires a payment (e.g., website, it is an open source platform to build a blog or website.) There are many varieties of websites, each specializing in a particular type of content or use, and they may be arbitrarily classified in any number of ways. A few such classifications might include: Click 'show' or 'hide' to toggle this table Type of Website Description Examples A site, typically few in pages, whose purpose is to sell a third party's product. The seller receives a commission for facilitating the sale. Affiliate agency Enabled that renders not only its custom but also syndicated content from other content providers for an agreed fee. There are usually three relationship tiers (see )., like, or a consumer like. Used to preserve valuable electronic content threatened with extinction. Two examples are:, which since 1996 has preserved billions of old (and new) web pages; and, which in early 2005 was archiving over 845,000,000 messages posted to news/discussion groups., A site created specifically to attack visitors' computers on their first visit to a website by downloading a file (usually a ). These websites rely on unsuspecting users with poor anti-virus protection in their computers. (web log) Sites generally used to post online diaries which may include discussion forums (e.g.,, ). Many bloggers use blogs like an editorial section of a newspaper to express their ideas on anything ranging from politics to religion to video games to parenting, along with anything in between. Some bloggers are professional bloggers and they are paid to blog about a certain subject, and they are usually found on news sites. Brand-building site A site with the purpose of creating an experience of a brand online. These sites usually do not sell anything, but focus on building the brand. Brand building sites are most common for low-value, high-volume (FMCG). A website the information in which revolves around a or public figure. These sites can be official (endorsed by the celebrity) or fan-made (run by a fan or fans of the celebrity without implicit endorsement). Website Platform to fund projects by the pre-purchase of products or by asking audience members to make a donation. A website that allows the visitor to donate to charity simply by clicking on a button or answering a question correctly. An advertiser usually donates to the charity for each correct answer generated., A site where persons with similar interests communicate with each other, usually by or message boards.,,, site A site the business of which is the creation and distribution of original content, site A site publishing, Used to provide background information about a business, organization, or service. Most dating sites in the 2010s have the functionality of websites., (e-commerce) site A site offering goods and services for and enabling online transactions for such sales. A site publishing fake news stories, intending to deceive visitors and profit from advertising. A site where people can hold conversations in the form of posted messages., A website designed specifically for use as a gallery; these may be an art gallery or photo gallery and of commercial or non-commercial nature. A website made by the local, state, department or national government of a country. Usually these sites also operate websites that are intended to inform tourists or support tourism. A site devoted to the criticism of a person, place, corporation, government, or institution. A site that lets users play such as. Satirizes, parodies or amuses the audience. Information site Most websites fit in this category to some extent. They do not necessarily have commercial purposes. Most government, educational and nonprofit institutions have an informational site. Media-sharing site A site that enables users to upload and view media such as, music, and, A website that is the replication of another website. This type of website is used as a response to spikes in user visitors. Mirror sites are most commonly used to provide multiple sources of the same information, and are of particular value as a way of providing reliable access to large downloads. A short and simple form of blogging. Microblogs are limited to certain numbers of characters and works similar to a status update on. Similar to an information site, but dedicated to dispensing news, politics, and commentary. Websites about an individual or a small group (such as a family) that contains information or any content that the individual wishes to include. Such a personal website is different from a celebrity website, which can be very expensive and run by a or agency. Update (Feb 2009): I've spent the last few months integrating Workamajig into our company. While there has been some nightmares (usually more our fault than Workamajig's) we are now up and running. While this type of software is always hard to integrate into a company, it makes it even moreso with four offices, currencies and timezones on three continents. The Workamajig interface is night and day better than the previous Creative Manager Pro. After the initial setup, our users are able to learn to log time and expenses in a matter of minutes. As some of the commenters pointed out below, it isn't perfect. Anything that is this overwehlming will take take some learning and some change of process. Having been through it, we are starting to feel much better for having made the effort. As an IT Manager by day, I am tasked with evaluating software that can help our company be more productive. The company is a 60 person creative agency that has a footprint on 3 continents. Overall we are run very well but we could be more efficient with the proper software. I am not talking about Microsoft Office or Adobe Creative Suite here. As a small-to-medium sized business, the most important software we run is our agency management suite of applications. This includes accounting, project management, time forecasting and more. Until last year, these processes were managed by a few different applications and even some shared Excel spreadsheets. My predecessor made the valient attempt to bring all of these functions into one new agency application. After testing the many software suites out there (Clients and Profits, Epicor, Adman, etc.), he went with what was then called Creative Manager Pro. On paper, it seems to address most of the needs that our business requires. From their website: Increase Sales Contact & Lead Tracking/CRM Calendar & Contact sharing with iCal/Address Book/Outlook Stay in Control Project Management, Gantt charts, Project Calendars, Tasks, Staff Scheduling, and more! Make every Job Count Knowledgebase estimating, purchasing, timesheets, and billing Collaborate with Clients Free Client Extranet, Digital Asset Management, proofs and comps. Account for your Success Full Ad Agency accounting or interface with your current accounting system. Measure and Adjust Creative Industry specific business metrics that keep you on track. The application was a standard installation on a Windows 2003 Server and needs a single SQL Database. By the time I entered the organization, the software was already installed and running for 9 months - but not in production. The first thing you'll notice about the application is that it is ugly in a 1990s sort of way. The icons look like clip art from an old Print Shop CD. As an IT professional, I can forgive this but this is not something you'd think would be welcomed in the creative environments that Creative Manager Pro serves. Uglieness can be forgiven. Unintuitive design and confusion can't. I've used many ERP solutions from SAP to Epicor to FileMaker built to Microsoft's Dynamics and this is by far the most confusing. This is a 2008 Application? 1995 called and wants its GUI back! Creative Manager Pro is supposed to receive a facelift via (get this!) an Adobe Flash makeover. If you thought this program couldn't get more cumbersome, get ready for Workamajig. From the screenshots I've seen, it is just as unintuitive, it just has a Flash interface - which means it won't work on most mobile devices. Back/forward buttons, bookmarks and browser navigation won't work. This just isn't feeling very good. Let's review: • Backend: Windows server with SQL Server requirement. For creative agencies. Php/MySQL like everyone else would have been a better decision. It is cheaper, more reliable and more efficient. It would also let more Macintosh based agencies use their platform of choice. • FrontEnd: Poor graphics and incredibly poor user interface soon to be updated with Adobe Flash. Another poor choice of platforms. Look at the market. Everyone else is going to AJAX enabled web interfaces. This isn't a video game, it is productivity software. Support is ALSO horrible. So I am stuck with this program that the agency has already paid for. It looks horrible and is not intuitive at all. However, with the right help, I may be able to get this thing running and properly train my employees. We've purchased a great deal of support with the software and have already worked our way through half of our support hours. I've been given a few email addresses and contacts at the company to get help. One of the contacts is our trainer. He sometimes works from home (because of the timezone differences in our offices) and does remote access sessions one hour at a time. Sometimes he can't connect to our server so the whole hour is wasted. We are connected at the same time from Europe and we haven't been able to diagnose the international routing issues that could cause these issues. To make matters worse, when scheduling training I get the run around from their arrogant Training Coordinator. When I address this arrogance with sarcasm, their Client Satisfaction Specialist has the NERVE to email all of the principals of my company whining that my emails aren't professional. To me, this defines unprofessional. I have never had such a bad experience with a software company in my 15 year IT career. If you are considering agency management software, my personal reccomendation would be to steer FAR clear of Creative Manager Pro.or Workamajig.or whatever they change their name to next. I am still determined to get this product working. Or at least give it a chance. I will follow up soon to report on how it goes. Creative Manager Inc. Asgard, in Norse mythology, is one of the nine worlds and the homeland of the Aesir, the race of warrior gods. Located on the highest level of the Norse universe, it is surrounded by a high wall of closely fitted stone blocks. The walls surrounding Asgard were built by Blast (or Hrimthurs), who asked in payment the hand of. The Asgard were a benevolent, extremely advanced race from the Ida galaxy that visited Earth on. Asgard, Old Norse Ásgardr, in Norse mythology, the dwelling place of the gods, comparable to the Greek Mount Olympus. Legend divided Asgard into 12 or more realms, including Valhalla, the home of Odin and the abode of heroes slain in earthly battle; Thrudheim, the realm of Thor; and Breidablik, the home of Balder. Asgard 2 is the next generation of one of the most popular headphone amps in the world, boasting higher performance and convenience features such as switchable gain and preamp outputs. It’s a versatile control center for your desktop system, ideal for most headphones from IEMs to orthos, and with pre outs for powered desktop speakers. Significantly Improved Performance We used what we learned in Mjolnir to significantly improve Asgard 2’s performance. A high-voltage, cascoded JFET gain stage feeds a high-current Class A MOSFET output section. The 80V rails on the gain stage allow us to reduce distortion, while retaining Asgard’s no-overall-feedback design in high-gain mode. Additional Versatility: From IEMs to Orthos to Active Monitors Asgard 2 offers two gain settings. The low-gain mode is perfect for high-sensitivity IEMs, while the high-gain mode is ideal for most other headphones, up to and including many orthodynamics. In addition, the preamp outputs can easily be connected to powered speakers, for a complete desktop system. Made in USA By “made in USA,” we mean made in USA. The vast majority of the total production cost of Asgard 2—chassis, boards, transformers, assembly, etc—goes to US companies manufacturing in the US. Our board house is 20 minutes away from our office in Newhall. Our chassis guys are just over the hill in the Valley. 5-Year Warranty Asgard 2 is covered by a limited warranty that covers parts and labor for five years. That’s 5 years. Which is up to 5X that of our competition, if you weren’t so hot at math. Note the marketing weasel-wording “up to.” 15-Day Satisfaction Guarantee Try Asgard 2 in your own house for 15 days. If you don’t like it, simply send it back for a refund, minus a 5% transaction fee. Try spending 15 days in an audio store. They’ll kick you out. Unless you buy them donuts. On B Stock When we have products with minor cosmetic flaws, we will sell them here as 'B-Stock'. If you choose the B-Stock option to save some money, please note that it is not eligible for the 15-day return. However, the full warranty applies. Wait a minute! You upgraded Asgard? Change is the only constant in life, and all that. I loved the original. Why’d you do that? Because we hate you. Just kidding. Asgard was a great amp for its time, but time has moved on. More people want to run powered monitors on their desktops, which means preamp outputs are important. More people want to use custom IEMs, so switchable gain is important. And we learned so much in the development of Mjolnir, we really wanted to share. So is this a circlotron? It’s still a single-ended Class A amp. It retains all the essential character of what made an Asgard an Asgard. But it now has Mjolnir’s high-voltage trick with a cascoded JFET input stage. Running very high voltage is one way to linearize circuits without using negative feedback. Which means Asgard 2’s distortion performance is much better than the original Asgard. We also eliminated Asgard’s output coupling capacitors, so this amp is DC in, and DC out. So does it sound different? Yes, it does, but it retains Asgard’s relaxed, natural character, together with additional transparency and dynamics. But I hear all amps sound the same! We think you can get a good deal on a headphone amp from Amazon for like $39. Or just use your receiver outputs and save even more money. I hear you are using terms like “no feedback” and “Class A” to baffle us with audiophile bullshit, what’s up with that? It’s no different than using the terms “precision operational amplifier” or “capacitor coupled gain stage” when describing a circuit. Describing the Asgard as a “no overall feedback, Class A” amp is accurate and relevant. If you think this is a value judgment on other topologies, or that we’re trying to obfuscate and confuse, well, what can we say, other than there are a ton of other options out there? Will Asgard 2 drive orthos? Many of them, yes. The HiFiMan HE400 and HE500 do well with Asgard 2, as well as the Audeze LCD2. The popular Fostex T50RP mods (Mad Dog, Paradox) are also well-served by Asgard 2. We’ve tested extensively with IEMs, and Asgard 2’s is excellent for them, in low gain mode. And other headphones? It may be the only amp you ever need, unless you want to get into tubes, or balanced amps. So can I leave my headphones plugged in all the time, or do I have to do the unplug-and replug thing every time I turn Asgard 2 off and on? You can leave them plugged in all the time. Asgard 2 has a muting relay which delays output on first turn-on, and mutes the output on turn-off. Does the volume control adjust the preamp outputs? Can I turn off the headphone outs when I’m using the preamp outputs? Plugging in headphones automatically disconnects the pre-outs. How do I switch the gain? There’s a toggle switch on the back of the amp. What does Class A really mean? For us, Class A means Class A—that is, the output stage is running its maximum current all the time. This is a real Class A amp, biased by a current source. It can never go out of Class A. Protip: running a Class A amp hard into a difficult load actually causes it to run cooler. Please note this is not an invitation to destroy your hearing. This is just a bit of trivia. We probably should be telling you to practice safe listening, use a condom, sign this disclaimer before you turn up Asgard 2, don’t use the lawnmower as a hedge trimmer, coffee is hot, blah blah, but we don’t roll that way. So, this thing runs damn hot, like Asgard? If by “damn hot” you mean 40-45 degrees C, then yes. And you’re not concerned with that? The entire chassis is a heat sink, and we’re running the outputs well within their safe operating area, even derating for the operational temperature. Sorry, some engineerese crept in there. But it still runs hot! And technically, that’s still not a question. If you want an amp that runs cold, it’s best to look elsewhere. Steve Guttenberg “High-end audio can be a rather expensive hobby, but every now and then I stumble across something really amazing, that’s priced for the real world.” “The first thing you notice about the Asgard’s sound is its clarity, so music seems remarkably alive and realistic. I’ve demoed “Birth,” an excellent-sounding film score on dozens and dozens of reviews, but the Asgard revealed unheard details in the music. The score was recorded at Abbey Road Studios, and I have never been more aware of the studio’s acoustic “space,” so I was virtually transported to the recording session.”. Description Prime Minister Robert Muldoon has met his match in the charismatic and eloquent Labour Party leader David Lange. Bob Jones’ New Zealand Party also threatens to split the right wing vote, making a Labour victory all the more likely. Social Credit still exists as a small political force, however leader Bruce Beetham is hoping to build the party’s influence. With the nation in the midst of economic strife, will Muldoon hang on for a fourth term? Or will Lange bring ‘piggy’ down and return Labour to office? Will Jones’ New Zealand Party establish itself as the voice of the Right? Or will Beetham’s message ‘cut through’ to New Zealanders and gain support for Social Credit? Infact it can change the proportion between center and side information to widen (or narrow) the stereo image of recordings without phase cancellation artifacts caused by delays and frequency operations common in other stereo enhancers based on primitive methods. In stereo recordings of acoustic music, side information is often related to ambience, while center information gives an idea of the distance between the listener and the sound source. For example, with SI-1 it is possibile to improve mono compatibility or attenuate the reverberation to focus on central image by lowering the side control slider. On the opposite, to widen the stereo image of a stereo recording, lower the center control slider. SI-1 will be also useful to video makers that use a camcorder with a stereo mic and need to reduce lateral noises and ambience, for example, to focus on a dialog that is taking place in front of the camera. Is originally the name of a god (more specifically a certain type of, from Ba‘al Zebûb, lit. 'Lord of Flies') but is also used in the New Testament as a synonym for Satan. A corrupted version, 'Belzeboub', appears in (Inferno XXXIV). In other, non-mainstream, Christian beliefs (e.g. The beliefs of the ) the word 'satan' in the Bible is not regarded as referring to a supernatural, personal being but to any 'adversary' and figuratively refers to human sin and temptation. (top right on the picture) refuses to prostrate before the newly created is referred to as Iblis or sometimes the Shaytan (Arabic: Like the usage of the word satan in the Hebrew Bible, Shaytan is also a word used to refer to beings called in the Christian Bible, especially the New Testament). Etymologically, Iblis means 'the desperate (of God's mercy)' in Arabic. Thus, the name 'Iblis' can be seen as a sobriquet given to Shaitan after falling from Grace. According to the, God created Iblis out of fire, either, along with all of the other, out of 'smokeless fire' or identified with Jann mentioned in created out of a 'scorching fire' different than the regular jinn and depicted as an originally angel. The primary characteristic of the Devil, besides, is that he has no power other than the power to cast evil suggestions into the hearts of men and women. The Quran says that the Devil was among the angels whom God ordered to bow down to Adam after his creation, it says in: And [mention] when We said to the angels, 'Prostrate to Adam,' and they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was of the jinn and departed from the command of his Lord. Then will you take him and his descendants as allies other than Me while they are enemies to you? Wretched it is for the wrongdoers as an exchange. Whether Iblis was actually an angel or a Jinn whom God elevated to the angelic assembly is a matter of debate among Muslim scholars. Some scholars, such as, believed that Iblis was actually an angel whom God created out of fire. He was the most worshipful and knowledgeable of angels. Thus, when the Quran identifies Iblis as a Jinn, it means that he belonged to a class of fiery creatures called Jinn, which encompasses both heavenly Jinn (fiery angels) and earthly (ordinary) Jinn. Such a notion is evocative of the biblical, a rank of angels looking like burning fire. [ ] Long before Adam was created, traditions narrate, earthly jinn roamed the earth and spread corruption upon it. As a result, God sent an army of angels under the leadership of Iblis to fight them. Iblis' ego conflated after his victory on earth. He thought he was better than any other creature, and thus God's favorite. God's creation of Adam and his order to the angels to venerate him was a blow to Iblis' pride. While all the angels obeyed God and bowed down to Adam, Iblis disobeyed haughtily saying: I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay. Consequently, God expelled Iblis from Heaven, with the latter promising to lure mankind into disbelief and evil as an act of revenge from their father, Adam. Also, some scholars call Iblis 'The Peacock of Angels', referencing his foolish hubris. On the other hand, other scholars believe that there are no such things as heavenly Jinn or fiery angels, and thus Iblis was not an angel, but a Jinn whom God elevated to Heaven as a reward for his worship and righteousness. According to this opinion, angels do not have; they obey God's orders without questioning or complaining. As for the angels, they prostrated before Adam to show their homage and obedience to God. However, Iblis, adamant in his view that man is inferior, and unlike angels was given the ability to choose, made a choice of not obeying God. This caused him to be expelled by God, a fact that Iblis blamed on humanity., an eminent Muslim theologian who lived in the 7th century A.D, was quoted as saying: Iblis was not an angel even for the time of an eye wink. He is the origin of Jinn as Adam is of Mankind. Initially, the Devil was successful in deceiving Adam, but once his intentions became clear, repented to God and were freed from their misdeeds and forgiven. God gave them a strong warning about Iblis and the fires of Hell and asked them and their children (humankind) to stay away from the deceptions of their senses caused by the Devil. [ ] Islam does not depict the Devil as enemy of God, as God is supreme over all his creations and the Iblis is just one of his creations. Iblis' single enemy is humanity. According to the verses of the, the Devil's mission until the or Resurrection Day ( yaum-ul-qiyama) is to deceive Adam's children (mankind). Thus he doesn't oppose God, but works within his plans as a tempter, therefore human can master his imperfect nature and recognize good. Closer to the Jewish understanding of the Devil, evil does not originate from an external being, rather the Devil takes advantage of humans own evil inclinations. Evil thoughts, doubt, despair and other misgivings in the humans mind, called waswasa, are therefore regarded, as evil suggestions made by the Devil or one of his minor demons, who tries to lead the person astray from good. The struggle against the mischief of Iblis and his temptations is called the 'Greater '. Sufi view of the Devil teaches that people should love God without expecting anything in return. Consequently, is regarded by Sufis as that perfect type of love because the pining lover expects nothing in return. Thus, some Sufis see the Devil as the paradigm of love and the perfect lover. Despite the traditional interpretation of Devil's fall from Grace as an act of excessive pride and rebellion against God, some Sufis see it as an act of self-sacrifice for God's love. The Devil refused to bow down to Adam out of his uncompromising and devotion; he refused to venerate anything or anyone but God., a well-known medieval Sufi Muslim theologian, narrated: Encountering Iblis on the slopes of Sinai, Moses hailed him and asked, 'O Iblis, why did you not prostrate before Adam?' Iblis replied, 'Heaven forbid that anyone worship anything but the One. [] This command was a test.' The Devil believed that God ordered him to bow down to Adam to test his love for him. The Devil should maintain his love for God at any cost. So, even if the cost of Devil's refusal to prostrate before Adam is falling from Grace, he should proceed with it out of his unconditional love for God., a Muslim Sufi saint, believed that after the Day of Judgement, will cease to exist, and the Devil will be back to the service of God as one of his cherished angels. Bahá'í Faith In the, a malevolent, superhuman entity such as a devil or satan is not believed to exist. These terms do, however, appear in the Bahá'í writings, where they are used as metaphors for the lower nature of man. Human beings are seen to have, and are thus able to turn towards God and develop spiritual qualities or turn away from God and become immersed in their self-centered desires. Individuals who follow the temptations of the self and do not develop spiritual virtues are often described in the Bahá'í writings with the word satanic. The Bahá'í writings also state that the devil is a metaphor for the 'insistent self' or 'lower self' which is a self-serving inclination within each individual. Those who follow their lower nature are also described as followers of 'the Evil One'. Yazidism believe that God created the world and entrusted it to the care of seven Holy beings, among whom was ( King Peacock in English). When God ordered his Holy beings to prostrate before Adam, Melek Taus refused to carry out God's order out of his devotion to him. As a result, God made him the leader of all angels and his deputy on earth. An alternative name for the main deity in the tentatively of the,, is Shaitan. [ ] Rather than Satanic, however, Yazidism is better understood as a remnant of a pre-Islamic Middle Eastern religion, and/or a movement founded. Because Melek Taus, similar to the devil, refused to bow down before humanity, and consider Melek Taus to be Satan and based on this belief, they claim that the are devil-worshippers. In fact, there is no entity in Yazidism which represents evil in opposition to God; such is rejected by Yazidis. The connection with the Devil, originally made by Muslim outsiders, attracted the interest of 19th-century European travelers and esoteric writers. The Yazidi narrative of Melek Taus bears a striking resemblance to the Islamic account of the Devil (especially the one held by some Sufis as mentioned before). Also, some Muslim scholars named the Devil the Peacock of Angels, a term almost equivalent to Melek Taus, Angel Peacock. Similar figures in other religions Ancient Egypt. On the island Bastoy, located in the Oslo fjord live a group of delinquent, young boys aged 11 to 18. The boys daily, sadistic regime is run by the guards and the principal who bestow both mental and physical abuse on them. Instead of the boys being straightened out with education they end up being used as cheap, manual labor. The boys attempt to survive by adapting to their inhumane conditions. One day a new boy, Erling (17), arrives with his own agenda; how to escape from the island. How far is he willing to go in order to get his freedom? It's such a shame the Norwegian Committee did not choose this film as the contender for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The acting is top notch from all the main characters. Kristoffer Joner and Stellan Skarsgård's characters really gives you the chill, but the actors that really surprised was the newcomers Trond Nilssen and Benjamin Helstad characters. They delivered the best dialogs and very convincing acting. If you are a sucker for true stories about injustice, mental and physical abuse and uprising against a brutal regime, then go watch this film now! Forget about The Troll Hunter, this is probably one of the best Norwegian films from the last decades. Patmos, Greece A tiny, mountainous speck in the Aegean Sea, the 13-square-mile island of Patmos is where, according to Christian tradition, St. John was exiled in A.D. 95 after being persecuted for his faith by the Romans and where he wrote his Gospel and the Book of Revelation. Ten centuries later, in 1088, a monk built a monastery on the island dedicated to the saint. This established Patmos as a pilgrimage site and a center of Greek Orthodox learning, which it remains to this day. In 1999, Unesco declared the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian—along with the Cave of the Apocalypse, where St. John is said to have received his revelations from God, and the nearby medieval settlement of Chora—a World Heritage site. Unesco stated: “There are few other places in the world where religious ceremonies that date back to the early Christian times are still being practiced unchanged.”. Sado Island, Japan With its dramatic mountains, lush forests and temperate climate, Sado Island is now a popular retreat. But in medieval times, the island, 32 miles west of Niigata Prefecture in the Sea of Japan, was a place of banishment for those who had fallen out of favor with the rulers of the day. More than 70 people—notably aristocrats and artists—were exiled here, beginning in A.D. 722 with the poet Asomioyu Hozumi, who criticized the emperor. Other exiles included the Emperor Juntoku, who attempted a coup against the Kamakura shogunate in 1220, and the monk Nichiren in 1271, who preached a radical form of Buddhism. Today, many attribute the island’s eclectic population and cultural riches—Sado has more than 30 Noh stages and is known as the “Island of Performing Arts”—to the presence of these early exiles. Île Sainte-Marguerite, France Just off the coast of Cannes in the Mediterranean Sea, the small, forested island of Sainte-Marguerite—about two miles long and a half-mile wide—was home to one of history’s most enigmatic prisoners. The convict, whose identity was concealed behind what was most likely a black velvet mask, was brought to the island in 1687, during the reign of Louis XIV, and locked up in the Royal Fort, then a state prison. (His barren cell can still be seen.) Later, he was moved to the Bastille, where he died in 1703 at around age 45. The prisoner’s identity and the reason for his incarceration are still not known. But over the centuries, they have been the subjects of much speculation. One popular theory, that he was an older brother of Louis XIV, became the basis for Alexander Dumas’ classic tale The Man in the Iron Mask. The Royal Fort continued to be used as a prison until the 20th century. Today it houses the Musée de la Mer, devoted to marine archaeology. Robinson Crusoe Island, Chile In 1704, British privateer Alexander Selkirk was marooned on Isla Más a Tierra in the Pacific after quarreling with the captain of his ship, the Cinque Ports. He lived alone on the rugged 29-square-mile island, 418 miles off Valparaiso, Chile, for more than four years, subsisting on fish, lobster, goats and seals, until he was rescued by a passing ship in February 1709. Woodes Rogers, the captain, described Selkirk upon rescue as “a man Cloth’d in Goat-Skins, who look’d wilder than the first Owners of them.” Selkirk’s ordeal is believed to have been the inspiration for Daniel Defoe’s novel Robinson Crusoe, published in 1719. The Chilean government renamed Isla Más a Tierra to Robinson Crusoe Island in 1966, in hopes of attracting tourism. Devil’s Island, French Guiana History’s most notorious penal colony, Devil’s Island actually consisted of several prisons, one on the mainland near the capital, Cayenne, and three offshore, reserved for the most dangerous offenders: Isle Royale, Isle St. Joseph and tiny Devil’s Island. Napoleon III established the penal colony in 1854, and some 80,000 French convicts—criminals, spies and political prisoners—would be sent there before it officially closed in 1938. While there, most of the convicts were assigned to hard labor, either in timber camps or on the construction of a road prisoners called “Route Zero,” which was nothing more than a make-work project. The penal colony was also known as the “Dry Guillotine,” owing to the high mortality rate from disease, harsh working conditions and hunger. (Prisoners who failed to meet daily work quotas in the timber camps were denied food.) An estimated 50,000 inmates died. The most famous of several well-known prisoners was Capt. Alfred Dreyfus, who, wrongly convicted of treason, spent four and a half years there in solitary confinement, from 1895 to 1899. Another was Henri Charrière, whose 1968 memoir, Papillon, recounting his escape, became a best seller and a major motion picture. In the mid-1960s, Devil’s Island, by then abandoned and overgrown, got new life when the French government chose French Guiana as the location for its space center. The space agency purchased the three offshore islands, which were under the launch trajectory, and in the 1980s decided to preserve many of the prison buildings as a cultural heritage site. Alexander Selkirk’s ordeal on this Pacific island is believed to have been the inspiration for Daniel Defoe’s novel Robinson Crusoe, published in 1719. (Wolfgang Kaehler/CORBIS) St. Helena Located in the middle of the South Atlantic, 1,200 miles from Angola and 1,800 miles from Brazil, the island of St. Helena is among the most remote places on earth. This detail was not lost on the British, who sent Napoleon into exile here following his defeat at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The general and his 26-person entourage were lodged at Longwood House, the six-room former summer residence of the island’s lieutenant general. Napoleon passed the time reading, gardening and dictating his memoirs. He was free to go wherever he wanted on the property, but had to be accompanied by a guard for outside excursions. Napoleon died on St. Helena in 1821 at age 51. Today, the rocky, 47-square-mile island (pop. 4,250) is a British Overseas Territory and is still accessible only by water. Coiba Island, Panama Fifteen miles off Panama’s Pacific coast and surrounded by shark-infested waters, 122,000-acre Isla Coiba is the country’s largest island. First inhabited by Cacique Indians and later pirates, it was established in 1919 as a penal colony for Panama’s most dangerous criminals. Political dissidents were sent there under the military dictatorships of Omar Torrijos and Manuel Noriega. Human-rights groups frequently reported on the harsh conditions of the penal colony, including incidents of torture and murder. One former inmate, Panamanian journalist Leopoldo Aragón, recalled that prisoners were forced to run a gauntlet, chased by guards beating them with clubs. The penal colony was shut down in 2004. Since the island was never developed, it boasts vast tracts of virgin tropical rainforest, mangrove swamps, pristine beaches and species found nowhere else in the world. Isla Coiba is also among the last places in Panama where scarlet macaws and crested eagles still exist in the wild. In 2005, Coiba National Park—which includes the island, 37 smaller islands and the waters surrounding them—was designated a Unesco World Heritage site. Galápagos Islands, Ecuador Between 1946 and 1959, the Ecuadorean government used 1,790-square-mile Isabela, the largest island in the Galápagos chain, as an agriculture and penal colony. Some 300 prisoners—hardened criminals and political dissidents—were incarcerated there under extremely harsh conditions. Guards ordered them to build a wall out of lava rocks brought from a distant crater—a wall that served no purpose. A number of prisoners, slaving under the hot equatorial sun, are thought to have died during its construction. Today the wall is all that remains of the penal colony and is known as the Muro de las Lagrimas, the Wall of Tears. Robben Island, South Africa Located seven miles offshore of Cape Town across wind-whipped Table Bay, Robben Island has been a place of exile for most of the past 400 years. It was used as a prison by the early Dutch and British, as a leper colony and mental hospital between 1846 and 1931, and as a political prison for non-white opponents of the apartheid regime from 1960 to 1991. Many well-known dissidents—Nelson Mandela, Robert Sobukwe and current South African President Jacob Zuma, among them—were incarcerated here under brutal conditions, enduring beatings, harassment and forced labor in the island’s lime quarries. In 1997, the 1,447-acre island became a museum, with guided tours provided by former political inmates, and today it’s among the most popular tourist destinations in Cape Town. Alcatraz, San Francisco, California Named Isla de Alcatraces (Island of Pelicans) by an early Spanish explorer, the small, rocky island in the middle of San Francisco Bay was the site of one of the United States’ most feared prisons. From the day it opened in 1934, “The Rock” was a prison’s prison, receiving other penitentiary’s most incorrigible and dangerous inmates. No criminal was ever sentenced directly to Alcatraz. A total of 1,545 people were incarcerated there in its nearly three decades of operation, including Al Capone; Doc Barker, of the Ma Barker gang; Robert Stroud, a.k.a. The “Birdman of Alcatraz”; and George “Machine Gun” Kelly. As the prison was 1½ miles offshore and surrounded by frigid waters with treacherous currents, escape attempts were few. Of the 34 people who tried, most were recaptured or killed. Five, however, have never been accounted for and are listed as “missing and presumed drowned.” Alcatraz closed in 1963 because of high operating costs. During the rest of the decade, Native Americans occupied the island twice, claiming their right to it under an 1868 treaty. The second occupation ended in 1971 with their removal by federal marshals. In 1972, Alcatraz became part of the new Golden Gate National Recreation Area and today receives more than a million visitors a year.
